Description

An original WW2 British Home Front novelty ashtray produced by Fieldings of England, modelled in the form of a miniature chamber pot and decorated with strongly anti-Hitler wartime imagery.

The interior of the bowl features a caricature portrait of Adolf Hitler, positioned so that cigarette ash would quite literally be dropped onto his face. The front carries the humorous slogan “FLIP YOUR ASHES ON OLD NASTY”, together with a swastika motif and a further reference to Poland, while the reverse is marked “JERRY NO 1” above an Iron Cross-style emblem. The underside carries the Fieldings maker’s mark and “MADE IN ENGLAND”.

Pieces such as this form an interesting part of British Home Front social history, reflecting the deliberately mocking and often irreverent anti-Nazi humour found in civilian wartime souvenirs and novelty ceramics. The chamber pot form itself was part of the joke, reducing Hitler to the subject of ridicule while also turning the piece into a practical ashtray.

The ashtray remains in very presentable condition. There is noticeable glaze crazing across the surface, which is clearly visible in the photographs and is consistent with the age and nature of the ceramic. Importantly, there do not appear to be any chips, major cracks or areas of repair. The darker marking around the underside of the foot is simply surface dirt from having been stood on a table or similar surface, rather than staining within the glaze. The painted decoration and wording remain strong and highly legible throughout.

A particularly characterful piece of original British WW2 Home Front memorabilia, combining wartime propaganda, social history and period humour in a very displayable form.
