An original WW2 British Home Front Lucas “Masklite” A.R.P. cycle headlamp shield, complete with its original printed paper packaging. Manufactured by Joseph Lucas Ltd. of Birmingham, this purpose-made blackout accessory was designed to allow cyclists to continue using their headlamps while complying with wartime lighting restrictions.

The shield was fitted inside the front of a cycle lamp and obscured the upper portion of the light while restricting the beam produced by the reflector. The original packaging specifically states that the Masklite would immediately convert a headlamp to meet wartime lighting requirements, avoiding the need to paint or black out the reflector. It also includes fitting instructions and an extract from the official wartime lighting restrictions relating to cycle lamps.

Particularly interesting from a Home Front perspective is the red instruction printed on the packaging asking the owner to retain the packet for police inspection if necessary. This gives the set a strong connection to the practical enforcement of blackout regulations on the British Home Front, rather than being simply a generic bicycle accessory.

The shield itself retains its black finish, concentric guide lines and clear “LUCAS PATENT ‘MASKLITE’” lettering to the front. The semi-cylindrical fitting piece to the rear is also present and remains firmly attached. There is some light age-related wear, small areas of oxidation and minor surface marking, but overall the shield presents very well.

The original buff-coloured paper packaging is also included and remains complete and highly legible. It shows general age toning, handling wear and light creasing consistent with wartime paper packaging, but the printed Lucas branding, original price of 6d, fitting instructions and blackout regulation information all remain clear.

A very good surviving example of a distinctive WW2 British Home Front blackout accessory, made especially desirable by the presence of its original wartime packaging.
