SKU:
Added by : Mark Raynsford
Description
An original WWII British Home Front helmet retaining its original black painted finish and painted SFP (Street Fire Party) markings to either side. The shell shows honest period wear, including a couple of small shallow dents to the crown, but remains an untouched example with good overall originality.
Inside is a hand-painted owner’s name, G.T. Graggs, a nice personal feature and one that may offer scope for further research.
Shell & Markings
The black finish appears original and untouched, showing age and service wear consistent with use. The painted SFP markings remain visible to both sides.
Liner
Fitted with an early Mark I liner by VERO (Everett W. Vero & Co.), size 6¾, dated 1939. The liner retains the early oval crown cushion pad and five oilcloth tongues, all present and in fair condition. The original chinstrap is also in place.
Overall
A solid original Home Front example with SFP markings, an early 1939 dated VERO liner, original chinstrap and named interior. An honest wartime piece showing genuine age and use.
Historical Note
During WW2, Street Fire Parties (SFP) formed part of Britain’s civil defence system, with volunteers tasked with dealing quickly with incendiary bombs during air raids, often before larger fires could spread. Helmets such as this are associated with those civilian defence units that served on the British Home Front during the Blitz.
