Description

A charming and increasingly scarce WW2 Era British Home Front domestic paraffin lamp, complete with its original white glass shade and finished in an attractive pale green enamelled base. Pieces like this offer a genuine glimpse into everyday life in wartime Britain, when practical household lighting remained essential during blackout restrictions, power disruption, and evening routines carried out under far more modest conditions than today.

Designed as a freestanding table lamp, this example would have sat comfortably on a dresser, bedside table, washstand or kitchen shelf, providing dependable light through the use of a simple wick-fed paraffin burner. The burner is marked Made in England, adding to its period British character, while the wick adjustment wheel still turns smoothly as it should.

The lamp has a pleasing utilitarian look that suits the era perfectly — functional, honest, and made for regular household use rather than decoration alone. The base is internally weighted, believed to contain lead shot or a similar ballast material, giving the lamp reassuring stability and helping prevent accidental tipping during everyday use.

Condition is good for its age, showing only the sort of expected age-related marks and wear acquired over decades of life, most notably to the underside/base area. The glass shade displays well, and the lamp presents attractively overall. There is currently no wick fitted, though replacements are easily sourced if desired.

A strong display item for any WW2 Home Front, blackout, or British domestic history collection, and equally appealing as an authentic period interior piece with real character.
