Description

Der Kampf im Westen translates from German as The Struggle in the West. Published in 1940, this German propaganda book formed Volume II of the Die Soldaten des Führers im Felde series and was produced to document and glorify the German military campaign in Western Europe during the early stages of WW2.

The book is particularly notable for its extensive use of stereoscopic photography. The images, many taken by military photographers and war correspondents, show German troops, vehicles, battlefield scenes, damaged towns and Allied prisoners and equipment. As with much wartime propaganda, the accompanying text presents events from the German regime’s perspective, placing strong emphasis on military success while largely ignoring the wider destruction and human cost of the campaign.

This particular example is the green cloth-covered variant, with the title Der Kampf im Westen displayed in traditional blackletter-style script to the front. Internally, the book retains the original stereoscopic viewing system and, most importantly, all 100 original numbered 3D photographs are present.

The photographs have been checked individually and the complete set of 100 is there. They remain in very good condition and are still arranged in their numbered order. The original folding stereoscopic viewer is also present and remains functional, opening and closing as intended.

The book itself is in very good overall condition for its age, with the green cover retaining a strong appearance and the internal pages remaining well preserved. Complete examples are especially desirable, as the individual stereoscopic photographs and viewers are often missing from surviving copies.

A particularly good and complete example of this unusual 1940 German wartime publication, retaining the book, original stereoscopic viewer and the full set of all 100 3D photographs.

I think that first paragraph now gives the buyer the useful bibliographic point without overcomplicating the description.
