Description
A very good example of a WWII German K98 bayonet, manufactured in 1942 by Berg & Co., Solingen, using the wartime maker code AGV. The bayonet is numbered 8894 and is accompanied by a non-matching 1941 E.F. Hörster scabbard.
Blade
The blade remains in very good condition, retaining approximately 95% of its original bluing. It remains unsharpened and finishes in a good point. There are some light scratches to the blade, but these do not detract greatly from its overall appearance.
The ricasso is stamped 8894 to one side, with 42 AGV to the reverse, identifying manufacture in 1942 by Berg & Co., Solingen.
Hilt & Grips
The wooden grips are in excellent condition with no splits or damage and retain their original two screw bolts. The flash guard is also undamaged, and the rifle retaining button remains fully functioning. Two Waffenamt inspection stamps are present on the top of the hilt.
Scabbard
The steel scabbard retains a decent proportion of its blued finish, showing light wear but with no major dents or damage. A Waffenamt inspection stamp is present on the lower ball.
At the throat, the scabbard is numbered 3198, confirming that it is non-matching to the bayonet. The reverse is marked 41 ASW, identifying manufacture in 1941 by E.F. Hörster, Solingen.
Of particular note, the usual throat screw has been replaced by a rivet. This type of alteration can be encountered on scabbards that have undergone later repair or refurbishment, including post-war refurbishment. Without further evidence, however, it is not possible to determine when or where this particular alteration was carried out.
The bayonet fits the scabbard very well.
Overall
A very decent WWII German K98 bayonet with an especially good unsharpened blade retaining approximately 95% of its original bluing.
Historical Note
The K98 bayonet, officially designated the Seitengewehr 84/98 III, was the standard bayonet associated with the German Karabiner 98k rifle during the Second World War. Produced by numerous manufacturers throughout the war, the different maker codes, dates and inspection markings found on surviving examples make them an interesting collecting field in their own right.
