WW2 German K98 Bayonet by CRS (Paul Weyersberg & Co), Dated 44 – Matching Numbers
SKU: 0406M
Added by : Mark Raynsford
Description
A late war example of a WWII German K98 bayonet, dated 44, produced by CRS (Paul Weyersberg & Co). As expected for this stage of the war, the finish shows the typical reduction in machining quality, with a more coarse appearance across the hilt and fittings. That said, this is a solid, honest piece with matching numbers.
Blade
The blade remains in excellent condition, retaining approximately 95% of its original finish. It presents clean with a well-defined point.
At first inspection, the edge gives the impression it may have been sharpened. However, on closer examination, there are slight variations along the edge that are not consistent throughout the full length. Because of this, it is likely this is how the blade left the factory rather than the result of later sharpening, which would typically show a more uniform finish.
The ricasso is marked with the serial number 2220 on one side, and 44 with CRS on the other, confirming 1944 production by Paul Weyersberg & Co.
Hilt & Grips
The hilt shows the expected late war characteristics, with a slightly more crude finish compared to earlier production examples.
It is fitted with attractive lighter brown bakelite grips, a variation less commonly encountered than the darker type. The grips are secured with their original screw bolts and remain firm. The rifle retaining button is fully functional, with the pommel being stamped with two Waffenamt inspection marks.
Scabbard
The scabbard is in excellent condition with no damage or indentations. It retains its original throat screw and shows a Waffenamt marking to the lower ball. It is serial numbered 2220, matching the blade, and marked 44CRS on the reverse, confirming a matching set. The finish and tone of the scabbard closely match the hilt and crossguard, giving a consistent overall appearance. The bayonet fits snugly, as it should.
Overall
A strong late war matching example with honest characteristics of 1944 production.
Historical Note
By 1944, German wartime production was under increasing strain. Materials were harder to source, skilled labour was limited, and output demands were high. As a result, K98 bayonets from this period often display simplified finishes, rougher machining, and less attention to detail compared to early war examples.
Despite this, functionality remained the priority. These later bayonets represent the shift from precision manufacture to necessity-driven production — making them an important and honest reflection of Germany’s late war industry.
