An original WW2 German K98 bayonet, manufactured by WKC and dated 1939, with matching serial number 8068 to both bayonet and scabbard. The bayonet remains in sound condition with no dents or damage. There is some pitting to areas of the exterior metalwork, while the Bakelite grips remain in excellent condition. The strongest feature of this example is the condition of the blade.

Blade

The blade is excellent and remains unsharpened, retaining approximately 95% of its original bluing. It has a full profile with a strong, pointed tip and is in very good overall condition. The ricasso is stamped 8068, with WKC marked to the reverse, while the spine is stamped 39, denoting manufacture in 1939. WKC was a long-established Solingen edged-weapons manufacturer, producing swords, daggers and bayonets during both World Wars.

Hilt & Grips

The dark Bakelite grips are in excellent condition with no cracks or damage and are secured by the two original screw bolts. The rifle retaining button functions correctly and carries a visible Waffenamt inspection stamp, with two further Waffenamt stamps present on the opposite upper section of the hilt. The flash guard remains undamaged, with some light pitting present to the hilt, crossguard and flash guard.

Scabbard

The original steel scabbard remains straight and undented. The front is stamped with the matching serial number 8068, while the reverse is marked WKC and dated 1939. A Waffenamt inspection stamp is also present on the lower ball. Unfortunately, the throat screw is absent; replacements are available, but we prefer to leave original items as we find them rather than add replacement parts. The blade fits the scabbard correctly and locks into place with a firm snap.

Overall

A good original 1939 WKC K98 bayonet with matching numbers. There is some light pitting to the exterior metalwork, but no dents or damage, and the grips remain in excellent condition. The real strength of this example is the blade, which remains unsharpened and retains approximately 95% of its original bluing.

Historical Note

The K98 bayonet was designed for use with the German Karabiner 98k rifle and became one of the most widely carried German bayonets of the Second World War. Used throughout the conflict and across the various theatres in which German forces served, it has become one of the most recognisable German military edged weapons of the period. Matching-number examples remain particularly desirable to collectors, as bayonets and their original scabbards were frequently separated during service and in the years following the war.
