Description
This is a superb and increasingly hard-to-find example of a WW2 Kodak “Haze Screen for Aerial Observation”, produced in Britain for use in aerial reconnaissance and photographic interpretation.
Manufactured by Kodak Ltd. London, these haze screens were designed to improve visibility when viewing terrain from the air or analysing reconnaissance imagery. By filtering specific wavelengths of light, they helped reduce atmospheric haze, glare and contrast issues — allowing RAF crews and photographic interpreters to pick out crucial details that would otherwise be lost. Different coloured sections were used depending on conditions, with yellow typically aiding visibility in mist or haze, making this a genuinely practical tool used in real wartime intelligence work.
The piece is constructed with a solid wooden frame and integral handle, finished in black, housing the original multi-coloured filter screen. The form is both functional and visually striking, making it an excellent display item as well as a talking point.
The lower edge is clearly marked:
“KODAK” HAZE SCREEN FOR AERIAL OBSERVATION
KODAK Ltd. LONDON. MADE IN GT BRITAIN
Dating to the WW2 period (circa 1938–1946), this is a scarce survivor of a very specific and often overlooked aspect of wartime operations — aerial observation and photographic interpretation. Items like this rarely surface on the market, particularly in identifiable and complete condition.
There is light, honest wear to the black painted handle and frame, consistent with age and use. The filter screen remains intact, with only minor delamination visible to one section, and only noticeable from one side. Overall, it presents very well and retains strong display appeal.
A genuinely uncommon and highly interesting piece of WW2 RAF-associated optical equipment, with clear markings and excellent collector appeal.
