Description

An original WWII Pattern 1907 bayonet manufactured by Rifle Factory Ishapore (R.F.I.) and dated January 1941. Unlike many Indian-service examples encountered today, this bayonet retains its original full-length blade measuring approximately 433mm (17 inches) and remains complete with its leather scabbard. The bayonet displays clear wartime markings, honest age, wear and minimal wear throughout.

Blade

The full-length blade remains in very good condition overall. The blade has been period sharpened but not excessively, retaining a good edge and a nice point. Both fullers remain clearly defined and the blade shows only light age-related wear.

The ricasso is clearly marked with the crown over G.R.I. (George Rex Imperator), 1907 for the Pattern 1907 designation, 1 ’41 for January 1941 manufacture, and R.F.I. (Rifle Factory Ishapore). The reverse ricasso carries the IS212 inspection mark together with the X bend test mark.

Hilt & Grips

The steel hilt retains a pleasing period tone finish with the water drainage hole situated just above the grip plates. The rifle retaining button remains fully functional, with the wooden grips being secured by their two original screw bolts. The front grip scale is in excellent condition with a pleasing aged patina. The rear grip plate remains solid but displays two indentations and sits slightly shorter towards the crossguard than the front scale. This can be seen in the photographs.

Scabbard

The leather scabbard is in very good condition overall. The upper and lower steel mounts remain secure and retain their original staples. The leather body shows expected age and wear but remains structurally sound with all stitching tightly intact. The bayonet fits the scabbard correctly with a snug fit.

The age and colour of the scabbard fittings closely match that found on the bayonet hilt and crossguard, suggesting the two pieces have remained together.

Overall

A good honest wartime Pattern 1907 bayonet retaining its original full-length blade, a feature not always encountered on Indian-service examples. Clear markings, a functioning release button, original grip scales and a sound leather scabbard make this a nice collector’s example.

Historical Note

The Pattern 1907 bayonet was adopted by the British Army in 1907 for use with the Short Magazine Lee-Enfield rifle and remained in service throughout both World Wars.
