Description
Here we have a fine example of a WW2 German K98 bayonet with matching numbers, made by the well regarded firm Fredrich Herder, Abr. Sohn and dated 1941.
Blade
The blade is in near mint condition, retaining all of its original bluing, and remains unsharpened with a good sharp tip. There are a few patches of light grease marks that could be cleaned off, if the next owners chooses to do so. One side of the ricasso is stamped 41 ffc, which indicates the date 1941 and manufacturer F. Herder, while the reverse carries the serial number 2224, identical to the scabbard.
Hilt/Grips
The grips are dark bakelite and secured by two screw bolts. The flash guard is undented, with a fully functioning rifle retaining button. The button itself carries a Waffenamt stamp, with a further two Waffenamt stamps on the top of the hilt, as we commonly see, and an additional Waffenamt stamp just above the flashguard.
Scabbard/Frog
The scabbard is in good condition and fits the blade perfectly, with its throat screw present. It is numbered 2224 on the front, and 41 ffc on the reverse, which matches the bayonet. There is some light pitting in places, but nothing serious. A Waffenamt stamp is also present on the lower scabbard ball. Completing the piece is a correct K98 leather frog. While the frog has a split at the frog stud hole, the body remains strong, with all stitching intact and the four rivets present.
Summary
Overall, this is a very decent example with a near mint blade. Matching numbered K98 bayonets have always been desirable, especially examples with unsharpened, well preserved blades like this one.
