Description

This is a WW2 (1944 dated) pilot navigation board or ‘knee board’. Pilots attached maps and other papers with information to them, and then literally strapped them to their thighs hence the name ‘knee board’.

This particular one is late war. Earlier designs were made from different materials and this one here is a classic design, refined from the older design. Wooden ones were considered the standard for the time. It has a pair of leather straps on the back so a pilot could strap it to their thigh as intended, and also the pair of wing nuts at the top are also present. The leather, while used, is in VERY nice condition. It’s supple and not only does it show no cracks, it shows it WON’T crack for a very long time indeed. Both clips for the leather straps are also present, working just fine. There’s a pencil holder on the right side which was used for either some kind of graph pencil or grease pen. On the back, we have a pair of war marks, and a very clear date of 1944 which is typical for this item’s style during this period of the war. Each RAF (air ministry) item went through two stages of approval hence the two war marks.

Holding the two leather straps in place is a pair of wooden supports. These are held in place by eight flat head screws (all present). Additionally, there’s a hand written mark on top of the board. “MAYDAY 121.6” which is a lovely touch.

Overall it’s in very good condition, in particular the leather. The wood itself has been varnished and this is also in good condition. The wing nuts aren’t too tight or rusted and they work as they should. There are some marks (wear and tear) on the board but nothing too extreme at all (see pictures).

If you’re into Home Front or RAF militaria – or both, this is a lovely cosy piece that fits into any WW2 British/ Allied/ Home Front collection.
