Description
This is an original and complete WW2 U.S. Army Variable-Density Goggle set, dated 1944 and manufactured by the American Optical Company.
Designed for use in bright operational conditions, these goggles were issued to assist in observing tracer fire, tracking aerial targets, and reducing glare when working near or facing the sun. They were commonly associated with anti-aircraft units, machine gun crews, and other personnel required to visually follow tracer rounds or aircraft in intense daylight.
The goggles retain their distinctive red Polaroid “Tracer Visor” attachment, marked as non-polarizing and correct to the period. The frame is clearly stamped “U.S.” and dated 1944, confirming wartime production. The elastic strap appears original and consistent with issue examples.
Importantly, this set is accompanied by its original American Optical Company metal storage tin, labelled “One Goggle Variable Density Visor Attachment” with the correct stock numbering. Also included are the original paper envelopes for the red plastic visor components (Stock No. 74-V-3500) and the printed instruction sheet covering maintenance and repair kit contents. Complete sets with original paperwork are becoming increasingly difficult to source.
Unlike more commonly encountered flight or motorcycle goggles of the period, the variable-density type had a specific optical function tied to battlefield observation rather than general eye protection. As such, they represent a more specialist and technical piece of U.S. Army field equipment.
The condition here is where this piece truly stands out. The tin retains approximately 99% of its original paint and 100% of its original label. Overall, it remains in very good condition with only minor age-related wear. The goggles themselves are also in very good condition, with the elastic strap still fully functional. The lenses are free from cracks or damage, and the spare set of lenses remains in its original packet, with the factory seal still intact. Considering how fragile these sets can be, and their age, this example is remarkably well preserved.
A solid, complete 1944-dated U.S. Army optical set that would sit well in any WW2 U.S. equipment collection, anti-aircraft display, or specialist militaria grouping.
