Description

A superb First World War Canadian Ross Mark II bayonet, accepted into service in 10/15.

This is a wartime production example in exceptional condition throughout. The blade is outstanding, the hilt & cross-guard retain its original finish, and the leatherwork is among the best examples I’ve seen. It presents very well and shows no evidence of hard service use. A very strong and honest WWI Canadian example.

Blade

The blade is the correct factory-sharpened Mk II profile with a defined spear point and crisp edges. The steel retains a bright, clean finish, displaying its original factory cross-graining, and darker toning to the ricasso. The point is sharp and untouched. There are no signs of field sharpening, misuse, or service abuse. It is difficult to imagine upgrading this blade.

Hilt & Grips

The hilt is crisply marked:

ROSS RIFLE CO. / QUEBEC / PATENTED 1907

The reverse is stamped with the model designation II, the Canadian ownership mark (broad arrow within C), a Crown over 4 inspection stamp, and the acceptance date 10/15. The rifle retaining button functions perfectly. The hilt and crossguard retain their original blued finish with minimal handling wear.

The walnut grips are in excellent condition with only a few minor indentations. Both original screw bolts remain in place and undisturbed. Matching Crown over 4 inspection stamps are present on both grip panels.

Scabbard

The scabbard is correctly Canadian marked and dated 1916. Rear markings include the Canadian ownership mark, RC, the date 1916, and the model designation II. The steel throat mount carries further inspection markings including 23, along with the rack or serial marking G393.

The leather body is superb — firm, well-shaped, and with tight, intact stitching throughout. Importantly, the rear belt loop features the correct punched securing hole, officially authorised under Canadian List of Changes in 1912. This hole allowed the scabbard to be secured to the service tunic hook to reduce movement when worn. This is a correct Canadian specification feature and not damage. The bayonet fits the scabbard smoothly and securely with a snug, satisfying fit.

Overall

An exceptional wartime example of the Canadian Ross Mark II bayonet, accepted in 10/15 and paired with a correct 1916 dated scabbard.

The blade is superb.
The finish remains strong.
The grips are excellent.
The leatherwork is outstanding.

Examples in this condition are increasingly difficult to source.

Historical Note

The Ross Rifle and its bayonet were issued to Canadian forces during the early years of the First World War. By late 1915 production had settled into the wartime Mk II specification seen here.

Although the Ross rifle was withdrawn from front-line service in 1916, bayonets dated 1915 represent true wartime production and service-period manufacture, adding to their collector appeal.
