Description
An original Imperial German S84/98 sawback bayonet manufactured by BUNTGEN & SABIN, Solingen, dating to the 1916–1917 production period.
This example remains in full sawback configuration with all 19 double teeth intact. Although, in 1917 the German Army officially ordered many sawback bayonets to have their teeth ground off following controversy and reports of reprisals against troops carrying them. As a result, examples retaining their full, unmodified sawback teeth are scarcer by comparison.
Blade
The blade remains bright and finishes into a well-defined pointed tip. It presents very well overall with light staining consistent with age.
It is difficult to conclusively determine whether the blade has been period sharpened. The edge is not sharp today and appears slightly rounded from age and handling. If it was sharpened, it would have been during its early life, but there is no obvious aggressive post-war grinding or abuse. The 19 double saw teeth along the spine remain sharp and clearly defined. Inspection stamp is present on the spine.
Hilt & Grips
The wooden grips are in very good condition with attractive age tone. The front grip panel is darker than the rear — a common variation seen on many surviving examples, and both retain their original screw bolts intact. The flash guard remains undamaged, and the rifle retaining button functions correctly. There is honest surface rust to the hilt, crossguard and flash guard, but nothing excessive. The piece presents as original and untouched.
Scabbard
The original steel scabbard in dent-free condition with honest surface rust visible along much of the body, entirely consistent with age. The original throat screw is present, and a faint inspection stamp can be seen on the scabbard lug. The bayonet fits the scabbard snugly and correctly.
Overall
A solid Imperial German S84/98 sawback bayonet. This example remains complete with full sawback and honest wartime character throughout.
Historical Not
The S84/98 sawback variant was issued primarily to NCOs and specialist troops. Sawback examples accounted for roughly 6% of overall production. On October 17, 1917, the German War Ministry recommended that sawback bayonets no longer be issued to frontline troops. Following this order, many examples had their saws officially removed.
BUNTGEN & SABIN, Solingen produced sawback examples between 1916 and 1917, placing this example firmly within the later Imperial wartime production window.
