Description

Here we have a very good example of the iconic WW1 German 98/05 bayonet, often referred to as the (butcher bayonet).
The blade is clean and bright, maintaining a sharp point with minimal staining and no signs of damage. The blade is maker’s marked, which reads “Deutsche Maschinefabrik A.G. Duisburg”. Additionally, the spine of the blade is marked with a “W” under a crown, the year 1915 and an inspection stamp.
The wooden grips are in excellent condition, showing only minor wear and displaying an attractive medium-brown colour. The hilt features an inspection stamp and has a functioning rifle-retaining button.

The scabbard is in great condition, with no visible signs of damage or indentations. The rear of the scabbard, just below the throat, features a maker’s name that is small and difficult to read. The scabbard appears to have been period painted black, which is something we see often. However, determining the exact timeframe of this modification is challenging, as it was not documented at the time.

Overall, this is a nice clean example.
