Description

This is a stunning example of the highly sought after WW1 98/05 Sawback Bayonet. commonly known as the “Butcher Bayonet”.
The wooden grips feature an attractive light brown colour and are in superb condition, showing only one minor chip near the rivet on the reverse side. There is no damage to the crossguard, flashguard or hilt, and all parts remain in excellent condition, with a fully functioning rifle retaining button.

The blade is in outstanding condition, super clean and retains a sharp point along with an impressive row of sharp sawback teeth. The maker’s mark on the blade reads “WAFFENFABRIK MAUSER A.G. OBERNDORF AN”. Additionally, the spine of the blade bears a “W” under a crown, the date 1917, and a proof stamp.

The scabbard is in very good condition, with only a few minor indentations that difficult to spot unless inspected closely. The throat also features a proof stamp, as is commonly seen on these pieces. To complete this bayonet, it comes with a very good leather frog with all its stitching and rivets intact.
This is an excellent example of a sawback bayonet.
