Description
WW1 German 98/05 Sawback Bayonet
This is a good clean example of the early and sought-after 98/05 sawback bayonet, often referred to as the “butcher bayonet,” used by the German Army during WW1.
The saw-back blade is in excellent condition, showing no signs of rust or pitting, and retains a well defined sharp tip. The ricasso is stamped with the makers mark: “SIMSON & CO SUHL.” Additional markings on the spine of the blade include a “W” under a crown and the number “15,” indicating the year of manufacturer “1915,” followed by two inspection stamps.
The undamaged wooden grip plates are in superb condition, showing no signs of damage and are secured in place by the original screw bolts. The cross-guard is the scarcer early pattern, often referred to by collectors as the “big ears” version due to its distinctive shape.
The hilt features a functioning rifle retaining button with two additional inspection stamps above it.
The scabbard throat shows two inspection stamps and one on the lower ball. Notably, the wear on the metal scabbard is consistent with that on the cross-guard and hilt, an excellent indicator that these components have remained together since service.
To complete the set, the bayonet comes with a good condition leather frog that is correct for this model. The frog is maker marked, but unfortunately due to age, it has become hard to read, see photos.
A Good early 98/05 bayonet with an excellent blade.
