The second marking "I G" indicates that the knife was issued by the Indian government. Next we have the date "1917", with a "II" above it, this tells us its a MK2 model, and lastly we have the number "44", which is probably the batch number. WW1 German S84/98 Bayonet (double maker marked)
£245.00 SKU: 0128MThese German S84/98 bayonets were converted from the S71/84 bayonets and produced from 1909 to fit the mauser M98 rifle. While they were a new type of bayonet, it utilized leftover blades from the earlier S71/84 pattern, which were then fitted to a new hilt and had the muzzle ring removed. This particular bayonet features an exceptionally clean blade with no signs of rust or pitting. Notably, it also carries a unique feature that is not seen to often, a double makers mark. On the front ricasso, the bayonet is stamped with "ERFURT", while the rear ricasso is marked "ALEX COPPEL". These markings represent two of the more prominent manufacturers involved in the production of these blades. One possible explanation for this double marking is that the blade may have been produced by one manufacturer and later finished or assembled by another, leading to two makers marks. Another reason could be the bayonet got sent to a factory for refurbishment or reissue, and in turn they stamped the blade. On the spine of the blade it is dated "86" under a "W" and a proof mark. There is some pitting to one side of the cross-guard and one side of the upper pommel, but the rifle retaining button works fine and the wooden grips are in excellent condition. The leather scabbard is in decent condition with all stitching intact. The metal scabbard fittings are undamaged and have been period painted green. There are regimental markings on the upper scabbard fitting and the cross guard. These markings really add to the piece and is great for those collectors that enjoy doing research. -

The rifle retaining button is fully operational and there is a seven-digit number to the upper pommel. The single-edged blade shows general wear, but overall remaining clean and bright and also showing the Kokura arsenal trademark and small inspection stamp on the ricasso. The front of the steel scabbard shows wear but no damage, however, the rear does show several indentations and pitting.
